LONE STAR RECORDS FEATURED ARTIST
Don Walser
Walser's story is almost as incredible as his clear tenor voice. Though he started playing in bands during his teens, it wasn't until after a 40-year career as an accountant with the National Guard that Walser would get recognition for his musical talents. Dubbed "The Pavarotti of the Plains," Don always jokes that he and his band Pure Texas play the Top 40 hits from 40 years ago. In reality, a Walser show is a mixture of original material and classic compositions, with plenty of yodeling and Texas swing stylings thrown in for good measure. Equally as fascinating as his late start in the music business is his hip fan base, which includes Ministry's Al Jourgensen, the Butthole Surfers, and legions of young alt-country devotees.

At a time when Nashville welcomes everyone from retired rockers to washed-up child stars to make "country" records, Don Walser brings it all back home to the Lone Star State on his 2 Watermelon albums, Rolling Stone from Texas and Texas Top Hand, now available as Watermelon Re-Issues. Both are discs of genuine country and western music as it was and always should be: Honky- tonk, western swing and cowboy yodeling from "the greatest country singer in the world," as Lee Nichols of the Austin Chronicle describes Walser. ->more
