Don Walser
Texas Top Hand

Out of Stock

Texas Top Hand is Chapter Two in one of the greatest musical success stories to ever unfold: the ascension of Don Walser from a sixty-something National Guard retiree to what Texas Monthly calls “country’s unlikeliest king of cool.” With co-producer Ray Benson once again presiding, Walser renews such standards as “Tumbling Tumbleweeds,” “Whispering Pines” and “Danny Boy” with his effervescent vocal touch alongside other classics and now-favorites from his own pen. This is a set of pure Texas honky-tonk heaven stretching from the border to the plains, lauded by the music press for its reverence for the true cross of country music. Since this album’s initial release, Walser has gone on to sing at the Grand Ole Opry and be honored at the Kennedy Center, and further expand his audience that is ready to enjoy his eternally-appealing music

Don Walser
Rolling Stone From Texas

Out of Stock

Don Walser was dubbed “the Pavarotti of the Plains” by Playboy, one of the many top publications that, along with ABC-TV and NPR, sang the praises of the country music singing phenomenon from Texas. And Rolling Stone From Texas is the album that started it all. Walser’s debut national release was co-produced by Asleep at the Wheel’s Ray Benson, and features such Walser favorites as the title tune and “The John Deere Tractor Song” along with contributions from such legendary musicians as fiddler Johnny Gimble and the late Jimmy Day on steel guitar. Spotlighting Walser’s high lonesome singing, genuine cowboy yodeling and endearing musical charm, this is the album that prompted the Austin Chronicle to declare him “the greatest country singer in the world.”

Tish Hinojosa is one of the premier voices in contemporary folk music, and an esteemed singer-songwriter whose music speaks to matters of the heart and life as well as social concerns with eloquence and heart. Her recordings for Watermelon Records represent some of this gifted artist’s most notable work, now again available for her legion of followers through the Texas Music Group.

Since the original 1996 release of Jackpot, The Derailers have been leaders of the movement that has been renewing country music with a potent combination of roots credibility and progressive innovations. Melding the classic California country style with Texas honky-tonk, the group has won a fervent following from their consistent touring and subsequent albums. Now the album that started it all is back as the lead-off release in the Watermelon Reissue Series, which will be bringing the influential and momentous music of the Austin-based label to the marketplace again.

Accorded four stars by RollingStone.com, Jackpot was produced by Grammy winning roots music icon Dave Alvin, and features such trademark Derailers songs as “My Heart’s Ready,” “This Big City,” “I’m Your Man,” “Where Ya Been,” “Lies, Lies, Lies,” “Jackpot” and “100% Pure Fool.” With what New Country magazine described as their “sharp suits, greased hair and hard country,” The Derailers have revived the spirit of real country music for the 21st Century. Hitting the streets concurrent with the band’s first album for Sony’s Lucky Dog label, Jackpot is sure to score again with an ever-growing audience that enjoys country music straight-up, no chaser.

WATERMELON RECORDS was a bright star in the independent record label galaxy during the 1990s, delivering important and memorable Texas music, distinguished singer-songwriters and a wealth of other notable releases to an appreciative listening public.

Over the course of a decade, the Austin, Texas-based label earned Grammy nominations and critical acclaim for its efforts, and launched the recording careers of such Texas artists as Don Walser, Alejandro Escovedo, The Derailers and the Austin Lounge Lizards. It also provided a creative haven for such veterans as Tish Hinojosa, Iain Matthews, Steve Young, Timbuk 3, Santiago Jimenez, Jr. and Darden Smith, among others.

The Watermelon Reissue Series brings back onto the market many of the significant albums that the label issued, in some cases augmented with bonus material, new artwork and remastering. Launching this series are reissues from Walser, The Derailers, Hinojosa and Escovedo.
