Included in the set are rousing takes on Lee Dorsey's "Ya Ya" and Ernest Tubb's "Walkin' The Floor Over You," as well as a instrumental version of the Hank Williams classic "Jambalaya" where Lester recites the song's melody on harp with awesome musical eloquence. Blues Stop Knockin' proves that blues music can remain true to its roots yet relevant and contemporary here in the 21st Century.
Living legends of the blues are sadly becoming a dying breed. But Lazy Lester, known as "The High Sheriff of the Blues," remains alive and well and in top form on his latest Antone's Records release, Blues Stop Knockin'. One of the kings of blues harmonica as well as a creator of the Louisiana blues sound and swamp pop music, Lester vividly demonstrates his vitality and versatility on this CD, which features special guest Jimmie Vaughan on guitar. It's a set that demonstrates how a blues master can continue to remain creative and innovative, and how blues music still informs and inspires listeners.
Recorded in Austin, TX with producer Derek O'Brien, Blues Stop Knockin' was recorded with some of the city's best players in addition to guitar star Vaughan, whose trademark riffs complement Lester's classic harp work and singing throughout the set. And much like Lester's early work on the famed Excello Records label, Blues Stop Knockin' augments red-hot blues with forays into other genres that Lester makes all his own.
