From the White House to el barrio, Tish Hinojosa has enchanted, enlightened and entertained countless listeners with her distinctive cross-cultural brand of folk music. Born in San Antonio, the youngest daughter of immigrant parents, she has been performing since her teens. Over the years, she has incorporated country, pop and traditional Latin American music into her style, recording albums in English and Spanish (and both languages) for indies and majors and developing a loyal and loving audience. Her music and social activism has won her numerous awards and accolades, including a 1992 Indie Award for Best Folk Album, recognition by Fox TV’s Bravo Honors in 1995, and a Las Primeras (The Firsts) Award from Mana, the largest organization of Latina women. Her albums have been favorites on Triple A, Americana and Public Radio and have consistently won critical praise and been cited in annual Top 10 lists.
From Texas For A Christmas Night is a bilingual holiday CD with wide appeal that adds new material to selections released in 1991 on her Memorabilia Navidenia album on Watermelon Records. Originally recorded as a holiday gift on cassette for friends, the album was officially released after the copies she put on sale at Waterloo Records in Austin immediately sold out. The album then enjoyed huge and consistent sales.
From Texas For A Christmas Night adds a broad selection of new recordings to the original and traditional songs from before: a traditional Ecuadorian Christmas song (“La Baca Mariposa”); Walter Hyatt’s “In A Christmas Dream;” a new Hinojosa original (“For A Christmas Night”), a piquant rendition of “Silent Night;” and a traditional Sephardic Jewish Hanukah song from Spain (“Hanukia’). It is a lovely holiday document with cultural significance and year-round appeal.
This album offers an across the board charm for Anglo and Hispanic record buyers of all ages (Tish is also a popular children’s music artist) and religious persuasions. TMG/Lone Star Records is releasing it late in 2003 to meet demand in Austin and Texas as well as elsewhere, to be followed by a full promotional push for the 2004 holiday season. From Texas For A Christmas Night is destined to become a holiday classic. |
